Apparently, David Sedaris Picks Up Litter Too

My husband sent me a clip recently of David Sedaris on Late Night with Seth Meyers, talking about something I never expected to have in common with him:

Picking up litter. And I loved it.

David talks about walking for miles and picking up garbage along the way—not because someone organized a cleanup, not because anyone asked him to, and not because he was looking for recognition.

He simply saw litter and picked it up. That idea is exactly what inspired Pick It Up Seattle.

I started picking up litter while walking around Seattle because I love this city and I wanted to leave the places I passed a little better than I found them. One piece became another. Then another. And eventually I started wondering:

What if more of us did this?

What if picking up the piece of trash in front of us became something completely normal? You don’t need to organize a cleanup. You don’t need special equipment. You don’t need to spend an afternoon doing it. See a piece. Pick it up.

David Sedaris has apparently been quietly doing his version of this for years, and hearing him talk about it made me smile. There are litter picker-uppers everywhere.
